Tip#220 - Redesign not fade away……
(Yes, I have realised that most of my headlines seem to be related to 80’s adverts - what can I say?) It happens all the time – a new web designer comes along and wows you with graphics and logos and brand new layouts and navigation systems, and before you know it you’ve agreed to a complete website design. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But what about all of the links to your inner pages, the pages that the search engines have listed, people’s bookmarks and more? A hasty, ill considered redesign can do more harm than good, no matter how good the end result looks. I would suggest that in the first instance you write down the names of each page you have in your site, along with its corresponding address. Then make a note of the title and META tags, and a rough idea of the content. In the new design, where possible keep the page addresses the same, if not possible then do a 301 redirect (details at http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php ) Where pages have good search engine listings, endeavour to keep the titles, tags and content as close as possible in order to avoid losing them. No more tips until after Christmas now folks - have a fab one and look out for the book, out on 1st january! |
